Also Talking about Benevolence
Zhong Ming
(Clearwisdom.net) Master said in his article "A Brief Explanation of Shan
(Benevolence)," "Shan is the manifestation of the nature of the universe at different
levels and in different dimensions. It is also the fundamental nature of
Great Enlightened Beings. Therefore, a cultivator must cultivate Shan and
assimilate to the nature of the universe, Zhen-Shan-Ren
(Truthfulness-Benevolence-Forbearance)." An incident that happened yesterday let me clearly see the inadequacy of my
benevolence. Although this incident appeared to have no concern with our
truth-clarification effort, it, in fact, had a lot to do with it. I feel that it
is exactly these trivial matters in our daily lives that can fully reveal our
xinxing (mind nature) levels and the old cosmic forces are exactly using
these selfish mentalities as an excuse to test Dafa practitioners. These
mentalities also constitute one of the reasons why the tribulations directed
against Dafa still exist. The following is the account of that incident: Last evening, Mrs. Xu, with
whom we have shared a house, drove onto a highway and could not find her exit to
get off it, so she called her husband for help. On the phone, her husband kept
trying to comfort her, and then said that he would find a car and go to help
her. At that time, I noticed that I was indifferent to her situation, having no
worry for Mrs. Xu and having no thoughts of extending my help. At that time I
thought, "Perhaps, her husband will ask my husband to go with him together to
look for her," and I felt a little unhappy about this. As a Dafa practitioner, I
failed to have even a bit of compassion. These non-benevolent mentalities acted
like a black field, which had isolated me from the nature of the universe, made
my cultivation become a mere formality, and caused me to be unable to truly
upgrade myself. Actually, I think that a life is very sensitive to whether others have
treated him with compassion or not. When what I have conveyed to others is my
indifference and even hostility, how could I expect others to be in harmony with
me? Moreover, when I felt sick of someone, I am indeed very unhappy in my heart. I have also noticed that some Dafa practitioners have clearly manifested
their strong benevolence; they have very powerful fields of benevolence. Anyone
in these fields will feel comfortable and will wholeheartedly want to return it
with benevolence. Just like what Master said, "The Buddha light illuminates
everywhere, Propriety and justice rectify and harmonize everything." A marvelous experience I had last summer has let me feel the magnificence of
the realm of pure benevolence. One evening (last summer), on the way back to my
home, I suddenly felt that all my non-benevolent mentalities were discarded, and
it seemed that I had instantly been transformed into a different person. I had
reached a wondrous realm. That evening and the subsequent two to three days, I
had indeed experienced the beauty of selfless altruism. At that moment, I
thought that the true meaning of a life's existence is this: the significance of
a life's existence is for the wellbeing of others. At that time, I strongly
wanted, from the bottom of my heart, to be good to others; I felt that only this
is the original nature of a life. In that three days, I felt that my heart was
filled up with benevolence and joy; I even did not feel any pain during my
sitting meditation. It seemed that I had become a different person. That
experience was unforgettable to me. Sometimes, I painfully thought that perhaps my background before I started
cultivation was too bad, which had caused me to be unable to become a
compassionate person even after almost four years of cultivation. Perhaps, my
nature before was indeed deviated too far, and this is not a trivial matter. I
think that besides learning the Fa with a peaceful mind, I should also achieve
the state that when I discover any non-benevolent mentalities of my own, I will
firmly repel and eliminate them. The above is some of my personal understandings. I wrote it down to share
with Dafa practitioners for mutual encouragement. Please point out anything
improper.
